Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales Review on PS5

Hanging around on the streets and buildings, this is Spiderman, his favorite character.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PlayStation 5 is a stunning follow-up to Insomniac Games’ 2018 Marvel’s Spider-Man. While it is not a full sequel, it expands on the world and introduces players to Miles Morales as the new Spider-Man. Here's a breakdown of the game's strengths and some critiques:

Visuals and Performance

The jump to PS5 brings an astonishing improvement in visuals and performance. There are two modes for players to choose from:

  • Fidelity Mode: Features ray tracing, enhanced lighting, and 4K resolution at 30fps, creating highly detailed reflections and shadows.
  • Performance Mode: Prioritizes a smooth 60fps at a lower resolution, sacrificing some graphical flourishes but offering smoother combat and traversal.

Both modes are visually impressive, with the PS5’s SSD reducing load times to near-instantaneous.

Gameplay

Miles Morales' Spider-Man has a different feel compared to Peter Parker. While the core mechanics of web-swinging and combat remain similar, Miles introduces his own flair:

  • Venom Powers: Miles has bioelectric attacks known as "Venom Powers" that give him an edge in combat. These are satisfying to use, adding a new layer to the gameplay as they require tactical usage to defeat certain enemies or overcome challenges.
  • Camouflage: Miles can also turn invisible temporarily, allowing for more stealth options and creative approaches to encounters.

The combat is dynamic and fluid, with new enemy types forcing players to adapt strategies. The ability to chain Venom attacks with other moves makes the action fast-paced and rewarding.

Story

The narrative centers on Miles stepping into the role of Spider-Man, with Peter Parker out of the city. As Miles deals with personal struggles, he also faces a new threat in the form of the Underground, a high-tech criminal group led by the Tinkerer. The story has heartfelt moments, exploring themes of identity, responsibility, and the pressures of being a young superhero.

While shorter than Marvel’s Spider-Man, the story feels tightly focused, and Miles is a compelling protagonist. His personal relationships, particularly with his mother and best friend, are handled with care and give the game emotional weight.

Character and Worldbuilding

The game does an excellent job of portraying Harlem, where Miles lives. The community feels vibrant and alive, with small details that make the neighborhood feel distinct from the rest of New York City. The voice acting is strong, and the characters are well-developed, especially Miles, who comes across as relatable and genuine.

Side Content and Replayability

Though the main campaign can be completed in about 8–10 hours, there’s a decent amount of side content, including:

  • Side missions: These provide more insight into Miles' community and give players a chance to unlock suits and gadgets.
  • Collectibles: Items like time capsules and audio recordings help flesh out Miles’ backstory.
  • Challenges: Combat and traversal challenges return from the previous game, encouraging players to master their abilities.

Some players may find the side content repetitive over time, but it provides a nice change of pace from the main story.

Conclusion

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales excels as a launch title for the PS5, showcasing the console’s capabilities while offering a fresh take on the Spider-Man formula. Though it is a shorter experience compared to its predecessor, the game packs an emotional punch and delivers on the promise of an engaging superhero adventure.

If you're a fan of Spider-Man or enjoyed the first game, Miles Morales is a must-play. Its fantastic visuals, fun combat mechanics, and heartfelt story make it a standout title on the PS5.
